When you’re a 24-year-old Luxembourg international playing in the (currently) 12th best team in Belgium, the chance to play for Southampton doesn’t come around too often.
That is, however, one of the options presenting itself to Laurent Jans, according to Le Quotidien in Luxembourg.
The right-back, who has made 14 league appearances for Waasland-Beveren and scored one goal so far this season, has apparently caught the eye of Southampton’s latest manager Claude Puel, and the interest is very real.
In fact, Le Quotidien go as far as saying it is now ‘official’, as a ‘first approach’ has already been made by the Premier League side, suggesting a January transfer could be on the cards, especially at the price touted by the Belgian club.
According to the Luxembourg based newspaper, Waasland-Beveren would ask a mere €1m (£880k) for the defender, which would represent but a mere drop in the relatively vast puddle that is Southampton’s finances.
Other European clubs, like Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and Anderlecht are also interested, as well as two Championship clubs.
Furthermore, Sport Witness have had it confirmed from a source close to the player that the interest from England is very much real, as is the competition from Germany, France and Belgium.
If Southampton do really feel like they need a right-back, spending just under £900k for a player who could end up being a coup probably is a risk worth taking.
