For a while now the Austrian media have been ever so slightly concerned over Kevin Wimmer. The defender turns 24 years of age this month, and really needs to be getting more games than he’s been receiving at Tottenham.
Every time an Austrian squad has been announced in recent times, there’s been articles in the Austrian media pondering as to what Wimmer is actually doing at Spurs. It’s a fantastic club, with a brilliant manager, but none of that helps Austria when one of their talented youngsters seems to disappear off the face of the football word… apart from EFL Cup games.
Finally getting a chance in the Premier League, his first appearance of the season, Wimmer was dropped by Mauricio Pochettino into the North London derby and a new formation.
Playing three at the back, Pochettino needed Wimmer as Toby Alderweireld is still out injured.
Such is the way Wimmer’s Tottenham career has been going, perhaps it was fitting that it turned into calamity, with an excellent own goal… if such a thing can ever be.
The Austrian media celebrated his inclusion, but then had to cover the resulting mockery. Laola pointed out that one fan even changed the player’s Wikipedia page.
From being able to strut into the Austrian training camp after his big call-up, Wimmer now finds himself in Austria knowing that everyone knows about his nightmare own goal, and the resultant mockery.
