Cagliari have equalled their best start to a Serie A season since the golden era of the 1970’s. The club was sold by Massimo Cellino when he purchased Leeds United in 2014, and after a season in Serie B the Sardinian side have bounced backed in style.
Cagliari are enjoying their return to Serie A after a season in the second tier, and they are currently 9th in the league, just six points of the Champions League. La Nuova Sardegna report Cagliari have equalled the start they had in 2005, and only the side of legendary Gigi Riva have bettered this, and that was when they were one of the top sides in Italy.
During the summer Cagliari brought in the likes of former AC Milan forward Marco Borriello, Juventus’ Mauricio Isla, and Euro 2016 winner Bruno Alves, which seems to have paid off for the club.
Cagliari’s change in fortunes is contrast to how Leeds United’s Cellino left the club in 2014, when the squad needed investment. The situation of the new ground, which is in the process of being demolished, was hanging over the club, and Cellino is due in court soon with regards to his involvement with the project.
Leeds United fans will surely be looking on to see how Cagliari have fared without the Italian being in control of the club, and may wish for the same.
