It looks like one of the biggest transfer sagas of the year may be coming to an end.
Napoli striker Dries Mertens is signing a new contract with the club, according to reports from the Italian media today.
Sky Sports Italia and Calcio Mercato say the player has found an agreement with the Serie A side, frustrating the plans of Chelsea and Inter Milan to sign him.
It’s claimed that Mertens’ agents are currently exchanging documents with Napoli’s lawyers and the contract could be signed before the restart of the Italian league.
Mertens is expected to sign a two-year deal, to run until 2022, with an option of a further one. Calcio Mercato says that both Chelsea and Inter Milan had their offers on the table, but Napoli managed to convince the striker to stay.
Mertens was set to become a free agent this month, so that’s the Blues missing an opportunity of signing him for free.
