Arsenal have ‘expressed’ their interest in signing Bayern Munich defender Jérôme Boateng this summer, but could face competition from Chelsea.
The 31-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the Bavarian giants, having been at them since a move from Manchester City in 2011.
He has found his status at the club significantly reduced in recent years, although he has managed 25 appearances in all competitions this season.
There have been several months of speculation about his future and whether he’ll be signing an extension, with the belief being that he won’t and will be on the hunt for a new club.
Arsenal are of the clubs to have been linked, alongside Chelsea, and Fussball Transfers confirm that both clubs have expressed ‘interest in a commitment’ this summer.
They don’t make clear if either club have made their move as yet, with it yet to be determined what his future at Bayern looks like.
He’s impressed this season and has received praise from manager Hansi Flick but at the same time, should Niklas Süle’s return from injury go well then he will be pushed further toward the exit door.
Likewise, Bayern supposedly have an agreement in place with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, and although that can’t be finalised until 2021, it would also spell doom for Boateng.
So, his future ‘remains open’ at this point but should he decide to depart it seems both Arsenal and Chelsea will be waiting in the wings ready to pounce.
