French midfielder Mourad Meghni has revealed he turned down an offer to join Manchester United a few years ago.
Speaking to Il Resto del Carlino (via Bologna News), the 32-year-old was talking about his love for Bologna and mentioned an approach from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, but he turned it down so he could stay in Italy.
“Bologna are still in my hart, my career started there. I could’ve gone to Manchester United, but Bologna seemed a more appropriate place for me, where it was easier for me to grow well. Although the nickname of new Zidane made me more bad than good.”
Meghni left Bologna in 2007 to join Lazio, where he stayed for four more years. He later played for a few Qatari sides and took two sabbatical years between 2014 and 2015, until joining his current club CS Constantine from Algeria.
The player has an Algerian citizenship and represented their national team from 2009 to 2010.
After a little digging, we managed to find some old links between Meghni and Manchester United from 2005, so his claims of turning Manchester United down may be completely true.
