Wolverhampton Wanderers star Raul Jimenez claims to be eager to play the Olympics in Tokyo this year.
The striker spoke to the Mexican media on Thursday, and said he’s available in case the national team calls him up for the tournament.
“It’s always a wish to go to the (Olympic) games, more considering that I already have an Olympic gold,” Raul Jimenez told ESPN Mexico.
However, he makes it clear it’s up to Wolves whether to let him play or not, since clubs are not obligated to let players feature at the Olympics.
“It’s a dream that I’d like to fulfil again and I’d be one of the team’s reinforcement men. First I have to wait and then, if there’s a call, talk to the club.”
Raul Jimenez is 28 years old, turning 29 in May, so he would be one of the three overage players who would reinforce Mexico’s U23 squad.
Following the World Cup in 2018 and the Gold Cup in 2019, the striker would be having his third year in a row with shorter holidays due to his commitment to the national team.
Should he take part, he’d potentially be away from early July, with the competition starting on the 22nd, until after the final on August 8th.
The player was also asked about his future, and despite claiming he’s fine at Wolves, he couldn’t make any promises about it: “One is always open to everything, but I have a contract until 2023.”
