Sent around Europe on loans while he was at Chelsea, it took a while for Jeremie Boga to find his feet, but he’s finally done so at Sassuolo.
The Ivory Coast international, who was signed permamently by the Italian side in 2018, has been one of the great stories of this season in Serie A with his seven goals and four assists in 22 league games, helping his club get out of some sticky situations, especially of late.
This great form has attracted a lot of attention from clubs around Europe, but Chelsea have the advantage in all this, as they have some sort of agreement with the Italians to make buying him back easier.
Some reports spoke of a €15m repurchase clause, but Gazzetta dello Sport have it as a first refusal, meaning they can simply match accepted offers from other clubs.
With that in mind, it isn’t surprising to see Sassuolo worry a little about their star’s future.
There are some options, which Gazzetta go through, like Chelsea renouncing on their ‘primary right’ and simply want to ‘carve out a percentage on resale’.
Nowhere in the article does it say the Premier League side actually want to bring back Boga yet, and this is all about clarifying if they do or not, but there’s no denying their influence over any potential deal Sassuolo negotiate has been felt.
As Gazzetta explain, the Serie A side want to keep the player for a while longer (at least next season) by giving him a new contract, and Chelsea’s presence has ‘so far slowed down’ offers coming in, with clubs knowing they could easily lose out to the Londoners.
This has ‘so far favoured’ Sassuolo, but ‘now is no longer time for hesitation’, meaning intentions need to be clarified, and a meeting ‘could already take place tomorrow (Wednesday)’.
