Tottenham winger Érik Lamela is still much loved by the River Plate fans. Although he played there during the club’s bad years, the supporters reckon he did a good job and follow his career in Europe.
The player spoke to La Pagina Millonaria this Wednesday, and most of the chat was about River’s current moment and the possibility of returning to the club one day.
“You always have the desire to go back, but I’m also aware that I’m 24 and I’m fine where I am. It’s a bit difficult to go back now, as I still have many years of contract at Tottenham and I have my head there. I only think of what is coming at Tottenham.”
Asked about the different role he has at the English club, he said: “As you grow, you play in different positions. To this day I think I played in almost all of them. According to what the coach asks, you adapt to work for the team.
“I personally always to try do it with as much desire as possible. The other time I played the game that Leo was out, at the club I don’t know if I went to replace Bale, they bought many players and I was among them. In football, beyond the pressures, you must try to enjoy it.”
Lamela also revealed why he’s focused on taking advantage of every minute he has in Europe: “Time goes by so fast, it seemed like yesterday I was playing for River.
“I’ve been in Europe for several years, I’m trying to enjoy every moment because the career is not very long, and I’m enjoying the English football, which I like a lot.”
The 24-year-old has been playing regularly for Argentina since 2013 and seldom gets a chance to start.
The Argentine national team are doing well in World Cup qualification, as they’re in third in the table and four teams get a straight spot. They’re now facing Peru on Thursday and Paraguay on Tuesday.
