Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero may not be the number one at his club, but hasn’t lost his important role with the Argentine national team.
At 29, the player already has 80 caps, but admits he still feels nervous when call-up dates are approaching.
“I get nervous fifteen days before the list is out, I don’t look to how many games I play for the team,” he told Fox Sports yesterday, also claiming he needs to “justify why he started” in every single match he plays for the national team.
Romero has been Argentina’s number one since 2007 and played several tournaments for the team, including two World Cups. But the only international title he has is a golden medal from the 2008 Olympics.
On Lionel Messi’s absence from the national team, he hinted toward future glory: “How won’t God have something saved for Messi with Argentina?
“This is a group of first level. We need that 10 in it. Hopefully he’ll recover from the injury and be with us next month.”
Argentina are facing Peru away on Thursday and Paraguay at home on Tuesday. They are currently in third place in the table, only behind Uruguay, and tied with Brazil on 15 points.
