Over the past month or so, there have been a number of stories written in the English press about Aston Villa’s alleged interest in Christoph Monschein.
At first glance, the links make sense, since Wesley Moraes has failed the hit the heights expected of him so far following his expensive summer transfer, and with the Austrian bagging 13 goals in 18 league games so far this season, his composure in front of goal could go a long way at Villa Park.
Back in late November, Sport 24 believed Aston Villa were after the ‘super striker’, with Austria Wien reportedly ready to welcome the money they could make from a potential sale.
However, the club’s director of football, Peter Stöger, has other plans in mind, as he told Sky, relayed by Spox, that his striker’s exit wasn’t something on the agenda in January.
He said: “It’s something he has to decide. If he doesn’t come to my office and thinks he has a chance he’ll never get again in life, he will continue to play with us.”
As things stand, there are no concrete offers for Monschein, with Stöger continuing: “Otherwise, I would have to tell him. We are not actively moving on the market to get rid of him. I have no offer on the table yet”.
Of course, that could all change if Aston Villa, currently 17th in the Premier League, put down a big cheque on Austria Wien’s desk, but that has yet to happen.
Until it does, Monschein will remain in Vienna, and will likely continue to bag goals consistently.
