Manchester United failed in a bid to sign Real Madrid forward Lucas Vázquez this summer, according to journalist Fernando Burgos.

United underwent something of an overhaul this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjær looked to turn around the squad by getting rid of high earners and bringing in younger players for the future.

It seems, though, their focus was not entirely on the next generation, with them making a move for 28-year-old Vázquez.

Speaking on Onda Cero’s El Transistor show, relayed by Bernabéu Digital, journalist Fernando Burgos claimed that Manchester United made a bid to sign Vázquez from the Bernabeu this summer.

However, they were unsuccessful in their attempts to get a deal done, with Burgos stating Vázquez didn’t want to leave Real Madrid.

United were not the only interested parties, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich also name-checked, although their interest, mainly Arsenal’s, is well established at this point.

The apparent interest from Manchester United is brand new, though, and interesting given that they needed a right-winger this summer and signed Daniel James from Swansea to fill that role.

The youngster has since proven to be a big hit at Old Trafford, making a return bid for Vázquez in future unlikely, although perhaps with Solskjær looking to add experience to his frontline in January, this is a deal they could try and revive.

Vázquez has found himself out of favour at the Bernabeu this summer and would presumably jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford, especially if it was ahead of joining the likes of Newcastle United.
