A couple of weeks ago, Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio reported Manchester City were optimistic about completing a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and that talks were ongoing between the clubs.
There wasn’t really anything in the German media agreeing with the claims, although Aubameyang’s future is a topic well covered by the country’s media.
Those rumours were followed by claims in the Italian media that Borussia Dortmund had reached an agreement with Manchester City over the sale of Aubameyang, but that the player is demanding wages worth €12m a year.
The, as quickly as it came, it all went again.
A move always seemed unlikely as Hans-Joachim Watzke has made it quite clear that he doesn’t want to lose any more key players after the exits of Hummels and Gundogan.
There is a chance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan leaving this summer, given he only has a year left on his contract, and Dortmund wouldn’t want to face a backlash from their fans by allowing Aubameyang to leave in the same window.
The Gabonese forward has four-years left on his existing deal, and Dortmund are in no rush to sell him, especially given their other pressing issues.
No doubt this will all twist again soon, with a deal being reported as close and then dead again. Welcome to silly season.
