Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen features an interview today with Bristol City winger Niclas Eliasson.

The 23-year-old is currently the Championship’s assist leader, with six passes for goals so far. His good season has been catching the attention of his home country’s media, who want to know more about his time in England.

“I have three assists in two recent matches. It’s always fun to get confirmation that you’re doing something good,” Eliasson tells Fotbollskanalen.

“It’s an incredible acknowledgment that you are doing something good in a league that is as good as the Championship. It is of course fantastic fun.”

The player believes that Bristol City have a stronger squad this season, and that’s why they could fight for promotion this time: “We have a good team and in the past it has been a little smaller squad with a starting eleven and then two, three players that have come in.

“Now we have been quite strong this year. We have a broad and good squad, so it should definitely be possible to take one of the places.”

Speaking of chances for the national team after doing so well for his club, Eliasson says he still hasn’t been contacted by the Swedish staff.

“I haven’t actually talked to anyone. I hope, of course, and struggle to get there. It is a dream for all players, but I just try to make it as good as possible in the Championship and in England. I haven’t talked to anyone, but I focus mostly on the club team and hope for it later.”

The most interesting quotes were really about Eliasson’s contract situation. When joining Bristol City in a €2m move from Norrköping in 2017, he signed a three-year deal, which expires at the end of the season.

But the player claims he’s pretty happy at the Championship side, and it sounds like his satisfaction with the club is leading to a fine situation where a renewal shouldn’t be very hard.

“I enjoy being in Bristol. It’s a good club and I enjoy life outside of football too. Then you see what happens. It’s not just in my hands. We’ll see what’s available and offered. Like I said, I’m not really stressed about the situation. I should perform every week and do it as well as possible. Then it will settle.

“I know they are interested in extending the contract, but since then there has been no rush really on my part or their side to resolve it quickly. It will certainly be more and more talk later.”
