Real Sociedad striker Willian José has revealed he had the chance to join Newcastle United last year.
The Brazilian striker has been with La Real since 2016 when he joined in a £5m deal from Uruguayan side Club Deportivo Maldonado, and he’s been a big hit with the La Liga side, with 49 goals and 13 assists in 117 games for the club putting him in the top ten goalscorers in the club’s history.
His performances over the years have earned plenty of rave reviews from Spain and around Europe, particularly the Premier League, with the striker regularly linked with a move to England.
If things had turned out differently, that move could have happened last year, with him revealing he had the chance to join Newcastle United.
Instead, he stayed at Real Sociedad but is not ruling out a move to the Premier League should another offer come his way in future.
“The Premier is the best championship in the world, but La Liga is not far behind,” he told Marca.
“For me, the best teams are Real Madrid and then Barcelona. I could be in the Premier, but I am in the right place.
“I want to play in the Premier League one day, but for now I am happy here. I had an option to go to Newcastle last year (but) I’m happy at Real Sociedad, and I ended up staying.”
