On Thursday we covered reports from Spain which explained Celta Vigo and Valencia had agreed a deal which would see Maxi Gomez move to the latter.
Valencia would be paying €14.5m plus a million or so more in bonuses. Santi Mina would also be part of the deal on a permanent transfer, and there’d be another player loaned for two seasons.
We explained that something very dramatic would have to happen to change things… and then it did.
West Ham representatives landed in Vigo by private jet this morning, as reported by Faro de Vigo earlier. Celta refused to negotiate, happy with their Valencia deal and the Hammers were told they’d have to pay the €50m clause.
Then it was reported by Super Deporte that the player’s agent had asked Los Ches to match the commission he would have received for a West Ham deal.
Then it really wobbled.
Now, the same Super Deporte, who are close to Valencia, report West Ham think they’ve got their man and have even planned a medical for this weekend. There’s a belief from the London club that it’s ‘closed’.
West Ham’s offer to the player is said to be ‘dizzying’ and whilst it’s explained Gomez could still choose Valencia, there’s ‘not much optimism’ at the Spanish club right now.
