Charly Musonda was a revelation at Real Betis last season, having moved there in the January transfer window. Betis were so impressed with Musonda’s performances that very early on in his loan there was talk of efforts to keep him for longer.
Other clubs in Spain became interested, but Betis managed to convince both the player and Chelsea that a season in Sevilla would be the best option available.
Musonda is happy at Betis, he’s settled well in the area, and has been enjoying his football. However, manager Gus Poyet hasn’t been giving him a prominent role.
Since Poyet signed his Betis contract in May, Musonda hasn’t started a game for the club. He usually comes on as a substitute with about 30 minutes of the match left to play.
Spanish newspaper Marca say the player is calm, despite not starting games, and quote him as saying: “I am very happy to play here in a great competition with people like Joaquin and Ruben. I want to learn and give the best for the team. If now I play 20 minutes, fine; and if it is longer, good as well. The season is very long.”
Not overplaying may well be better for Musonda’s long term career, he is getting appearances but the club aren’t relying on him to drive them.
