Ahead of Tottenham kicking off their Champions League campaign against AS Monaco, Toby Alderweireld has been speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca.
The Belgian international spent some time in Spain with Atletico Madrid, before moving to Southampton on loan, and then on a permanent transfer to Tottenham.
Marca asked Alderweireld if moving to Southampton was a turning point in his career, and the defender explained: “After the season at Atletico, I needed to play, to prove myself at the highest level. At Southampton things went well and then I could sign for Tottenham.”
Southampton had wanted to sign Alderweireld on a permanent deal themselves, believing they had an option to make that possible, but the player pushed for his move to Spurs.
Naturally, Marca asked Alderweireld if he plans to return to La Liga one day, and he didn’t rule it out but it doesn’t sound like it’s something on the defender’s mind right now: “You never know. I enjoyed the time I was at Atletico. I became a better player, but the Premier League is fantastic and I’m happy.”
