The build-up to Tuesday’s Champions League meeting between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal has been a dream for the press.
Firstly, Unai Emery couldn’t stop gushing over Arsène Wenger as a manager during his press conference, while reports of the French manager rejecting to manage the Ligue 1 side have all of a sudden reappeared because why not?
Le Parisien have an article on Tuesday about the close relationship the Arsenal manager has with Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG’s president, and they look at how it all happened.
It all stems from the Qatari wanting Wenger as a pundit on beIN Sports, the media group he chairs, and a friendship blossomed.
Speaking to someone close to the Frenchman, Le Parisien also discovered that around the time Carlo Ancelotti was released from his contract at PSG, Wenger not only rejected the Ligue 1 champions, but also turned down advances from both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
According to them, ‘Wenger had always decided to honour his contracts with Arsenal’.
With the 66-year-old’s current contract with the London club expiring in 2017, and despite Unai Emery being named manager of PSG this season, Le Parisien feels Al-Khelaifi might give it another go if Wenger doesn’t renew at the Emirates.
Our money’s on Wenger renewing at least once more.
