Despite suggestions in Spain that Everton could send Andre Gomes back to Barcelona and instead sign Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis, the Portuguese midfielder still looks the likelier deal.
On Thursday, Sport report that Gomes is one of a number of player Barcelona can raise cash from this summer. And they need that cash, with an ambitious recruitment plan which has already seen Frenke de Jong signed, with his Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt expected to follow, they need to balance it with sales.
Getting money from players not currently in the squad is a perfect place to start.
The Catalan newspaper says that Everton would be ‘willing to pay’ €25-30m for Gomes.
At the lower of that scale it looks like a well priced deal for the Toffees. They’d struggle to get a player of the same level for just over £20m.
It’s quite possible Barcelona would accept a deal which includes bonus payments, giving Everton more room to negotiate.
For Gomes, staying where he’s clearly happy would obviously be a good idea, and Barcelona get a reasonable fee for a player they’re not going to be using.
