Rafael Camacho has made only one start for Liverpool this season and that came in his side’s FA Cup defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With just a year left on his contract, Record reported on April 20th the Reds will try to tie him down to a new deal ‘at all costs’ as they don’t want to lose him in the summer.
Another Portuguese newspaper, A Bola, now claims the 18-year-old was close to joining Sporting in January, but Jurgen Klopp blocked the transfer.
The winger now has received a ‘proposal’ from Benfica, but they will face competition from Sporting as the latter’s president Frederico Varandas is leading his side’s chase for the teenager.
It’s claimed the wideman is aware he needs to leave Anfield in the summer in order to get regular playing time and he wants to join a club that is playing in major competitions.
Camacho sees a move to Sporting with good eyes, but Benfica can lure him to join them with the help of the Champions League, which can be ‘very attractive’ for him.
A Bola explains ‘One thing is sure: in the next few days the clubs [Benfica and Sporting] will try to convince the player, although Liverpool will soon be able to offer him a contract renewal proposal.’
If Camacho decides against agreeing to sign an extension, it will be the last big opportunity for the Champions League semi-finalists to cash in from his sale.
