Chelsea signed David Luiz on deadline day after failing to sign their primary target Kalidou Koulibaly.
The Napoli defender was linked with a move to the Premier League club all summer, but negotiations with the club’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis proved to be extremely difficult.
The Senegalese defender also publicly pushed for a move, but that only made things worse, and he ended up staying at the Serie A club.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Koulibaly is set for a new contract at Napoli, but De Laurentiis wants to insert a release clause in his contract after Gonzalo Higuain’s big money move to Juventus.
Gazzetta say Koulibaly will sign a new contract until 2021 worth €2.2m a season, but with a release clause of €70m.
In fact, Napoli are trying to increase it to €80m, but the player would surely prefer to lower figure.
We’re not entirely sure if Chelsea will comeback for Koulibaly next summer with Andreas Christensen returning from loan, but if they do then they’ll have to break the bank for the defender.
