Watford’s victory over Wolves at Wembley will certainly live long in the memory, although supporters of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will want to forget it as soon as possible.
In a season which feels like one long good spell, following on from the brilliant promotion campaign, Wolves were brought crashing back down to earth.
At one point, they looked almost certain to be progressing to the FA Cup Final, winning 2-0, in control, with fans greeting passes with shouts of Olé!
Then Gerard Deulofeu scored a wonder goal and the whole dimension of the match seemed to change. A late penalty from Troy Deeney nearly took John Ruddy’s head off, and then Deulofeu won the match for Watford in extra-time.
Gazzetta dello Sport were clearly impressed with the game, and have a player from each side in their European Team of the Week.
Matt Doherty, who scored the opening goal for Wolves, gets in, as does Deulofeu.
The pair are joined by others including Jan Oblak, Mats Hummels and Karim Benzema.
