Jonas Gutierrez has returned to Argentina to play for Defensor, having spent last season playing for Deportivo la Coruna in Spain.
The Argentine’s contract at Depor was only for a single season, and it wasn’t renewed over the summer.
Argentine newspaper Ole have covered the player’s situation, and spoke to him about his current situation, and trouble finding a new club after returning to football following cancer.
When asked by Ole if his period out of the game had scared clubs off, Gutierrez explained: “Yes, for some time. Surely that has happened in England, when I left Newcastle, I did not receive more offers from that country.
“What happened to me maybe gave some teams in Europe fear, the lack of information. Okay, they are within their rights. For me it was gone and it was a life experience. Now I am in good health and for two years it’s just a memory.”
Gutierrez, 33 years of age, is now concentrating on getting games with Defensor, wanting to make up for lost time. Ole put it to the former Newcastle player that, if he impresses, there may be a chance to play for a bigger club or in Europe again… Gutierrez didn’t rule it out.
