Martin Braithwaite was pushing for a move away from Middlesbrough last summer, but the Championship side retained him against the forward’s wish.
In the winter market, the 27-year-old was allowed to join Leganes on loan for the remainder of the season.
The Denmark international’s contract at the Riverside Stadium will run down in 2021 and during the international break he’s given an interview to Danish publication Ekstra Bladet to discuss his future with the English club… or lack of it.
“I’m not coming back to Middlesbrough. I can’t imagine that,” Braithwaite explained.
Braithwaite joined Boro from French club Toulouse in 2017 and later that year, Tony Pulis was appointed as the club’s manager. The player doesn’t hold back when criticising the former Stoke City manager’s style of play.
“The project I was presented with in Middlesbrough changed completely when Pulis arrived. He has a strange way to play football. The team plays defensively with long balls. It’s really kick and rush. It doesn’t look so good to me,” he stressed.
Now that he is clear he does not have plans to continue with his parent club, a permanent move to the La Liga club is also not an option for the Dane.
“Leganes has no purchase option on me. I’m very happy to be in the club, but don’t think it’s a place I’m going to continue because they probably can’t pay the transfer fee for me,” the attacker explained.
“No matter how negative things look, it’s about working hard and being positive. Because suddenly you get a second chance. An option where things can change quickly. That chance I got in Leganes, where I thrive, but I also know that something new is probably waiting for the summer.”
