Despite a very impressive run of form in the first half of the season, and Unai Emery managing to help fans forget, at least for a while, the last few years under Arsène Wenger, Arsenal were given a reality check over the weekend when they lost 5-1 to Liverpool.
Sliced apart by Jürgen Klopp’s side, the Gunners’ defence were unable to contain the Reds’ attacking prowess, as mistakes were made and penalties handed out like sweets on Halloween.
This seems to have led to Arsenal reevaluating their defence (once again), and a surprising name has emerged from the depths of Serie A thanks to Calciomercato.it.
It’s worth pointing out that, at this point, this needs to be taken with a handful of salt, but the Italian website believe the Gunners are looking at the possibility of signing Torino’s Nicolas N’Koulou.
The idea has allegedly come from Unai Emery directly, and while no fee is mentioned, Calciomercato.it believe the Cameroon captain is worth ‘far more’ than the €3.5m originally paid by the Italian club to make his transfer from Lyon permanent in the summer after an initial loan.
While there’s no denying N’Koulou has enjoyed a solid spell at Torino since his arrival, it’s worth asking whether he’s of a level to improve Arsenal’s defence.
