After being a part of Belgium’s World Cup squad, Leander Dendoncker left Anderlecht and made a switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.
The English club took him on a temporary deal, which will be made permanent at end of the season, but he’s struggled for regular playing time.
Nuno Espírito Santo handed the 23-year-old his first appeance in the league in his side’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea, but he hasn’t been seen since.
Belgium manager Roberto Martinez gave an interview to DH and explained that Dendoncker’s ability to play in more than one position has become a disadvantage for him.
“When he came out against Chelsea, he was good, but he never played again, and if his club keeps Leander, it’s because he’s able to play in two positions,” the former Everton boss said.
“But in the end, this versatility is a disadvantage because the competition is high in each position. He needs clarity and the club must tell him if they can count on him or not. When he knows Wolves plans for him, Dendoncker will have to make a decision.”
It should be seen whether the Belgium international asks for a transfer, if he’s told that his situation is unlikely to change.
