If there’s one decision Matz Sels isn’t regretting, it’s leaving Newcastle.
The Belgian goalkeeper, who was bought by the Magpies from KAA Gent for around £6m back in 2016, left St James’ Park in the summer to play for Strasbourg in Ligue 1, who recently held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw.
During his time with Newcastle, he only managed 14 appearances before being sent out on loan to Anderlecht.
Speaking to HLN in Belgium, the goalkeeper explained the decision he had to take when he returned to England over the summer, and it didn’t involve sticking around.
Enjoying himself in France, the 26-year-old feels he’s ‘gradually growing to his best level’ at a club with a ‘fanatical audience’ based in a ‘pleasant city’.
Despite keeping just three clean sheets, Sels has helped Strasbourg to an impressive ninth in Ligue 1 after 16 games, conceding 19 goals in 16 games.
