Despite still only being 21 years of age, there’s no denying that Wilfried Ndidi is one of the first names on Claude Puel’s team sheet at the King Power Stadium.
The Leicester defensive midfielder, for whom the Foxes paid £15.8m back in January 2017, has started and finished all 12 of his team’s Premier League games this season, and is comfortably one of the better defensive midfielders currently in England.
However, there’s a young player in Belgium, more specifically at Ndidi’s former club, Genk, who’s even better, at least according to one of his teammates.
Speaking to RTBF, Sébastien Dewaest, who has played with both, explained why Sander Berge will be one of the best in his position in the next few years.
He said: “He’s the one that impresses me the most. Ndidi did the same before leaving for Leicester, but Sander is a step above. As soon as I saw him during his first training, I got it: he’s calm, clean, powerful and sees clearly. With him, everything becomes easy.
“He plays like a regular, but he’s only turned 20. It must be his Nordic education and having had to live by himself early, but nothing seems to faze him: I read an interview with Mbappé, and he reminds me of him through how mature he is at his age. I can definitely see him in the biggest clubs in the world in the future”.
Already a target for Everton before his move to Belgium, the Norwegian midfielder has also been linked with the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal in the past.
At the rate things are going, he won’t be with Genk much longer, and it will be very interesting to see who wins the race.
Maybe Leicester, like they did with Ndidi, can get ahead of the curve again?
