All the way back in March, Tanguy NDombele wasn’t quite the name he is now.

The 21 year old burst onto the scene for Lyon last season and it took a while for the transfer rumours to heat up, but now he’s being linked with several big clubs, and Tottenham are hanging in there.

Wednesday’s edition of Sport looks at Barcelona interest and names the club’s potential competition The Manchester clubs and Tottenham.

In March a potential price was put at €25m+. In May, L’Equipe said the player had ‘aroused the interest’ of Tottenham and PSG, and they said similar in August.

And then in September, L’Equipe claimed, ‘at the beginning of the summer’, Daniel Levy ‘verbally expressed’ his club’s willingness to pay €45m.

It wasn’t enough. A mystery €50m offer was also mentioned, and that wasn’t enough either.

Levy’s attempts to get in before the player’s market exploded were wise, if ultimately unsuccessful. The price will likely be higher next summer, but the competition may not be as fierce as reported.

Barcelona and the Manchester clubs are linked endlessly to big purchases and they can’t make them all. Ndombele isn’t a first choice target for the Catalan club, and neither Manchester side has been linked as strongly as Tottenham.
