Long touted for a transfer away from Liverpool after losing his spot to Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet remains with the Reds as the number two goalkeeper behind Alisson following the German goalkeeper’s loan to Besiktas.
Sitting on the bench pretty much every week, the Belgian shot stopper has made one appearance this season, in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, losing in the last few minutes to a stunning Eden Hazard solo effort.
Unfortunately for Mignolet, his situation is difficult for him to deal with, as explained by his compatriot Denis Odoi, who plays for Fulham at centre-back.
In an interview with DH at the weekend, the London based player said: “Honestly, I’m happy to be in London. When Simon leaves the house, he often gets hailed and even insulted. Here, I’m not bothered. Of course, I’m not Vertonghen or Dembélé.
“It’s not the same in Manchester or Liverpool than in London. I can often walk around with Moussa without being stopped. Mignolet has to put a hat on to go to town. He told me he’d like to swap his life for mine.”
Extending his contract for five years back in 2016, it’s fair to say the goalkeeper had no idea how things would turn out for him, meaning he’s kind of stuck at Anfield for the time being, especially with few clubs seemingly interested in his services.
Perhaps a loan in January could help him out, but it remains to be seen if the Reds would be open to him leaving Liverpool, just in case something were to happen to Alisson.
