Even before Atletico Madrid completed the signing of Jonny from Celta Vigo, the Europa League winners had already agreed a loan deal for him with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 24-year-old has started as a left wing-back in seven league games and even scored in his side’s 2-0 victory over Southampton.
His impressive form for his club saw him make it to Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for the fixtures against Wales and England this month.
After La Roja’s squad was announced, Marca quickly came out with a story about the Premier League player’s surprise inclusion for the two international matches, and pointed out he’s already played under Enrique, when the two were at Celta Vigo.
The fullback graduated from the Spanish club’s youth system before making his way into their first team in 2012, where he started as a right-back.
Hugo Mallo, who is still at the club, has held that position for close to a decade, due to which Jonny struggled to make way his into the starting XI when Paco Herrera and Abel Resino were in charge at Abanca-Balaídos. Enrique managed Celta during the 2013/14 season and didn’t include the defender in the starting XI for the first few matches.
Marca claims the current national team coach’s ‘invention’, moving his compatriot to the left-back position, was when things started to change for the latter.
Since then, the versatile player went on to become the ‘undisputed’ left-back at Celta and has managed to hold that position even at Wolves.
Even though it has now become his preferred position, the report claims that it is likely Nuno Espírito Santo’s man has been selected for the Spain squad as a right-back, which sort of ruins their whole ‘invention’ point.
