Christian Eriksen being missing for Tottenham against Barcelona is a big deal. The player is a very important cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s workings and it’s a shame he’s not available for such a big match.
Eriksen being missing for the Danish national team is an even bigger deal, given his importance to the side. In recent years the 26 year has fulfilled his promise on the international stage, adding to his form at club level.
For years there had been a frustration in Denmark that Eriksen wasn’t transferring his form and sometimes the criticism, even from his former national manager, was way over the top.
Things changed with Åge Hareide, and Eriksen helped his country get to the World Cup in Russia, after a terrible start to their qualifying campaign.
Denmark face Ireland on October 13th and then Austria four days later, and whilst the national manager is keeping hope, he’s quoted by BT.dk as saying he won’t contact Spurs: “Eriksen has an inflammation in a stomach muscle. Viktor Fischer got a foot injury. Both are questionable for the matches against Ireland and Austria. If both are ready, we become 24 men in the squad. We have notified the clubs that we will take them if they are ready. There will be trouble with the clubs if we took them now while they are injured,
“If he gets better, it may be that he first joins the team in Ireland right before the match. We must see how it goes. If I call Pochettino and ask for Christian Eriksen, then the answer will be no. Therefore, I have to wait and see.”
