Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku gave an interview to Business Insider in August and the 25-year-old admitted that he could retire from Belgium’s national team after Euro 2020.
De Rode Duivels manager Roberto Martinez gave his opinion on the former Everton man’s outlook the same month and admitted that he “understands” why the frontman has thought about retiring from international football in two years time.
He scored once in Belgium’s 4-0 friendly win over Scotland and managed a brace against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, following which he spoke to reporters, when he was asked if he had changed his mind on retiring from the national team.
With two goals for his country in the last appearance, the Manchester United man has taken his overall tally to 43 international goals. Martinez’s men finished third at the 2018 World Cup and Lukaku stressed that Belgium need to go one step ahead and win trophies.
“We win a lot, score a lot of goals and play offensive football. That’s nice. It’s just a shame that after the World Cup we do not have a prize in our hands yet. Everyone sees us as one of the best teams in the world. Now it’s up to us to prove that we can also win trophies,” the striker added.
