Stephan Lichtsteiner left Juventus after his contract expired at the end of last season and joined Arsenal on a free transfer.
The 34-year-old has made only one appearance for the Gunners so far this season when he came off the bench against Manchester City on August 12th, and Unai Emery has preferred Hector Bellerin ahead of him for the right-back position.
Lack of appearances at the north London club has not stopped him from being selected for the Switzerland squad for the current international break. Though he did not feature in his country’s 6-0 win over Iceland, the fullback could be in action to face England in the friendly tie, according to Zentraplus.
“You see, I could have signed for five other clubs this summer, knowing that I would certainly play 47 out of 50 games,” he said.
“But that did not irritate me, I wanted – as in 2011 before switching to Juventus – to join a big club. I was looking for a demanding challenge in a new league. That’s why I knew from the very beginning, at Arsenal that I had to fight for the regular spot against Hector Bellerin.”
Just the kind of attitude Unai Emery will have been looking for at Arsenal.
