Diego Godin was one of the defenders who Manchester United reportedly made a late approach for in the summer window.
In theory it may have been a relatively simple deal to do.
The Uruguayan has a €20m buyout clause and Ed Woodward and co may have felt throwing a huge amount of money at him would surely do the trick.
But Godin’s relationship with Atletico is different and he was hardly going to walk out on them without much thought.
The defender is perhaps Diego Simeone’s chief soldier and swapping all of that for Old Trafford may have appeared a risk too far.
What the Manchester United effort has done, reports Marca, is push Atletico into seeking a new deal for their player as quickly as possible.
Godin will get a pay rise and an extension, despite now being 32 years of age.
Atletico are bending their rules over contracts for over thirties and will give the South American a deal lasting until 2021, according to the claims.
