Belgian forward Laurent Depoitre joined Huddersfield Town from FC Porto last summer, a year after joining the Portuguese club from Genk.
The 29-year-old scored the only goal in his side’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea in May, which secured their place in the Premier League and that was his sixth goal in the league for the Terriers.
Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws claims the ‘fans of Club Brugge’ were hoping the attacker would return to the country, but that seems to be difficult because there has been no contact between the two clubs, let alone a possibility of imminent arrival.
Depoitre spent the weekend with his friends in Belgium, watching Brugge’s 1-0 victory over Mouscron. This got a section of Club Brugge fans excited and there were talks about a possible move to Jan Breydel Stadium.
What made it difficult for Club Brugge in signing the player is that even he isn’t keen on leaving David Wagner’s side this summer. In addition to this, HLN claims a return to Belgium is ‘unthinkable’ because of the transfer fee and the forward’s wages involved to complete the operation.
Depoitre, who was the ‘crowd favourite’ for a section of Club Brugge fans will return to his club today and resume training from Tuesday.
