Real Madrid have already appointed Julen Lopetegui as Zinedine Zidane’s successor after the latter decided to step down from his position as the club’s manager.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino was believed to be the front-runner to replace Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu, but prising him from Spurs was just too difficult. Pochettino was the guest on TV3’s program El Club de la Mitjanit (via Mundo Deportivo) yesterday, where he was asked about Real’s rumoured interest in appointing him as their new manager.
The former Southampton coach revealed an exit clause in his Tottenham contract, which is no longer valid. He also admitted that he was unaware if Real had contacted Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sign him.
Regarding the rumoured interest, he said: “To recognise my career and work, something positive and that makes me feel proud.
The Argentine committed his future to the north London club on May 24th by signing a long-term contract with the Premier League outfit. Pochettino has repeated that he’s happy at Tottenham and still wants to be part of the project.
“I am very happy at Tottenham. When I made the decision to renew, I did it with all the consequences. We are going to have the best stadium in Europe and a very nice project that I want to be part of,” he said.
“You cannot leave if you have just given your commitment to a club like Tottenham , which in its day signed me from Southampton and has given me the opportunity to be in the Champions League.”
