Marseille came from behind to secure a 2-1 Champions League win over Newcastle United on Tuesday.
Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle United an early lead by opening the scoring in the sixth minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the equaliser for the Ligue 1 side at the start of the second half.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker doubled Marseille’s lead in the 50th minute. That proved to be difference between the two clubs in the end.
Although Newcastle United had less possession [38%], they had one more shot on target [eight] than Marseille. However, they could only convert it into one goal, which wasn’t enough to secure three points in the Champions League group stage.
L’Equipe have rated both the Magpies and Marseille players, and we focus on only on Newcastle United.
Goalscorer Barnes received 6/10, which is the highest for Newcastle United players. The same rating was also given to Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock. Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw both were rated 5/10.
The newspaper gave 4/10 to Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Fabian Schär and Dan Burn. Nick Pope got 3/10, which is the lowest for the Newcastle United player. Their average team rating is 4.6/10.

L’Equipe state: ‘The Magpies started intensely, quickly rewarded by Barnes’ (6) goal in the 6th minute, his 4th of the season in the Champions League.’
‘But the plan, based on a deep-lying 5-4-1 formation, spearheaded by the isolated Tonali and Willock, only lasted one half, initially thanks to OM’s poor finishing.’
‘Gordon also missed valuable opportunities in transition [43rd, 45th+4]. Then Pope, alert until then, reignited the game with his inexplicable clearance for the equaliser, and his defence remained passive on the 2-1 goal…’
