Marcus Edwards came up through the ranks of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth team and made one appearance for their first team in 2016.
Spurs sold him to Vitória de Guimarães in 2019, who then cashed in from his sale to Sporting last summer. The Lisbon club paid a reduced fee, on the condition Tottenham retained their percentage of a future sale.
Tottenham were entitled to receive 50% of the fee from the 24-year-old’s future sale, which was reduced to 35% as part of the deal that saw Pedro Porro move from the Lions in January.
O Jogo now state Sporting and their president, Frederico Varandas, ‘intend to negotiate’ with Tottenham for Edwards. Spurs are currently set to receive 35% from the player’s sale and the Portuguese club want to reduce it to 20%.
Edwards’ displays, especially in the Champions League, have attracted attention from England. He’s open to making a switch, which has made negotiations with Tottenham ‘extremely difficult’.
It has also made it difficult for Sporting to convince the player and his entourage to raise his release clause from €60m to €80m.
Therefore, the newspaper states negotiating with Tottenham would be ‘a way to get around this difficulty’, to help Sporting get more profit from Edwards’ sale, if they decide to sell him in the summer.
Tottenham are interested in Sporting’s Manuel Ugarte and have closely watched him in action this season, including against Arsenal.
O Jogo explain the 22-year-old Uruguay international ‘can enter the equation’ when Sporting are negotiating with Spurs to raise Edwards’ clause.
If Tottenham were to ‘go ahead with the negotiation’ for Ugarte, Sporting will try to reduce Spurs’ 35% clause for Edwards.
This desire from the Portuguese club, and the power Tottenham hold over Edwards, provides Spurs with a distinct advantage when it comes to signing Ugarte.
