Former Tottenham midfielder Nile John has taken another step in his post-Spurs career. Portuguese side Moreirense confirmed his signing this week.
Reports from A Bola and O Jogo explain how the 22-year-old earned the move after standing out in Liga Portugal 2, continuing an unusual rebuilding process after leaving north London.
A Bola report that Moreirense moved for John after losing a starting midfielder to a serious injury and seeing another leave the club. The English midfielder then arrived from Feirense and signed a contract running until 2029.
The newspaper recalls his long background at Tottenham, and his experience with England at youth level.
This season, John made 18 appearances for Feirense. He scored three goals and provided one assist. Those performances helped him stand out in the second tier and attract attention from Primeira Liga clubs.
Meanwhile, O Jogo offer insight into how the signing is viewed internally. Speaking ahead of the derby against Vitória de Guimarães, head coach Vasco Botelho da Costa confirmed that John is already among his options.
“He’s a very talented player. He’s spent 14 years at Tottenham and fits perfectly into our project. He brings a different dimension to the midfield, especially in the final third”, he said.
The coach also highlighted John’s impact in the final third. He underlined the importance of his adaptation to Portuguese football, even if it came in Liga Portugal 2. That familiarity, he said, gives the staff confidence in a quick reintegration.
John has already been included in the squad, showing how quickly he has earned trust at Moreirense.
