On Friday, FC Porto announced the signing of Pedro Virgínia from Arsenal.
Their official statement says the goalkeeper is signing a three-year contract with the Dragons, and is joining their U-17 team.
There’s of course a little fuss in the Portuguese press, as always happens when local clubs sign players from Premier League sides.
Speaking to Porto’s website, 16 year old Virgínia talked a little about the feeling of belonging to Arsenal and now joining the Portuguese side.
“It was a very good experience in England. It was four great years with a great team, but now I come to FC Porto, a super team, one of the best in Europe, and I’m very happy.”
The teenager also explained Porto have been chasing his signature for some time.
“Wearing this jersey is a great pride. The scouts have been following me for eight years now and it was a dream of mine for a long time.”
Pedro Virgínia is the brother of João Virgínia, a 20-year-old striker who also spent a few years at Arsenal’s academy in the past.
João Virgínia left the Gunners to join Everton in 2018, signing a three-year contract with the Toffees, and is currently having a loan spell at Reading. So it’s time for the brothers to be a little further away from each other now.
