As part of their series on identifying alternatives for Philippe Coutinho, Mundo Deportivo look at Mesut Ozil on Tuesday. It’s claimed the German international can be signed for €20m from Arsenal in the January transfer window, which makes him a rather attractive prospect.
He’s not quite as attractive for Barcelona as Coutinho, but the Brazilian’s contract is long, lasting until 2022, and Liverpool have shown absolutely no sign of being flexible.
Mundo Deportivo state Barcelona submitted a written offer to Liverpool two months ago, well ahead of the January transfer window. The figures in the offer were the well trodden out €80m plus a further €30m in bonuses.
Liverpool haven’t responded, according to the Catalan newspaper. They haven’t rejected the offer, haven’t acknowledged it arrived, nothing.
Barcelona want to meet with Liverpool at the end of this month to discuss a Coutinho signing, at which time they can move on to other targets, like Ozil, if it’s clear there’s going to be absolutely no compromise from Liverpool.
For Barcelona to secure that meeting, Liverpool would actually have to reply to correspondence.
