Brighton & Hove Albion’s Michał Karbownik did not manage to impress during his two loan spells at Legia Warsaw and Olympiacos.
In the last window, the Seagulls let the 21-year-old join Fortuna Düsseldorf on another loan deal. The left-back’s agent wanted to find a club where his client could have prominence.
Since the start of September, the Brighton owned player has been a regular for the second division German club.
Fortuna have an option to buy the 21-year-old, but Przegląd Sportowy state they ‘will only think about’ it if they are promoted to the Bundesliga. They are now sixth in the table, six points behind league leaders Darmstadt.
Former Poland international Artur Wichniarek has heaped praise on the fullback’s decision to join Fortuna Düsseldorf on a temporary deal.
“It was a very good choice. Initially he had some problems, but it was a matter of joining the team, because he has a high speed and technical potential. He has been playing regularly for two months now and looks good,” Wichniarek said.
“The manager watched him last weekend against St. Pauli. He acted as a defensive midfielder and it was the only unsuccessful match of the Pole. On the left back he is doing great, he is praised.”
Wichniarek is of the belief the Brighton man’s displays for the German club could help him represent Poland at the 2022 World Cup.
“He will be useful for the national team, because Reca was injured and Puchacz had his debut in the 1st Bundesliga after one and a half years, but he played so poorly that in the next match he did not even fit on Union’s bench,” Wichniarek explained.
“The left side of the staff is poor, and Karbownik is in the rhythm of the match, he stands out in Fortuna, although someone will say that it is only the second German league. I believe that his club represents at least the level of our Ekstraklasa, and the coach will call players for the World Cup from there. I wouldn’t be surprised if Karbownik went to Qatar.”
Poland manager Czesław Michniewicz will announce the squad today and Karbownik can find out whether he has made it to the final list.
