As we’ve said a few times here, the Portuguese press is always following their managers and players who work abroad, mostly highlighting the good news when their teams win.
With José Mourinho having huge respect in Portugal, his arrival at Tottenham Hotspur always had big coverage, especially when the good results were coming.
But following the 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig last night, newspaper Record didn’t really feel like protecting the manager, and wrote a heavy story on his bad form with Spurs.
The headline says ‘The Worst Mourinho Ever’, showing that in 935 matches in his career, he had never spent six games without a win before.
Record then says Mourinho was ‘humiliated’ in Germany and will end the season with ‘a handful of nothing’.
The outlet writes: “Tottenham didn’t score a goal against Leipzig in the 180 minutes of the tie, having conceded four. Yesterday’s three were due (and a lot!) to enormous defensive passivity and a lack of concentration.”
They also say Spurs’ defence was ‘sleeping’ during the third goal.
It’s recalled that this has been Mourinho’s biggest defeat in the Champions League, along with Real Madrid’s 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund back in 2013.
Record point out this is the third time in a row Mourinho is eliminated in the Champions League’s round-of-16. It previously helped with Chelsea against PSG in 2015 and with Manchester United against Sevilla in 2018.
