Leander Dendoncker’s future at Aston Villa seems to have become a worry at the Belgian national team.
In comments made by pundit Philippe Albert today, it’s claimed that the midfielder’s potential lack of playing time at the Premier League side could harm his chances of featuring in the World Cup.
That’s what he said to Sudinfo while speaking of the pieces which Roberto Martinez is still sorting out before the tournament.
There, it was said the manager may have another player in mind for Dendoncker’s position.
“I know that Dendoncker delivered three good performances in June, but I wonder if the preference at the World Cup will not go to Boyata. He has not signed with Club Brugge not to play. He will be able to play after the break. On the other hand, I’m not sure Dendoncker won’t end up on the bench at Aston Villa,” Albert told Sudinfo (via Voetbal Krant).
Leandro Dendoncker joined Aston Villa on a €15m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.
With him not ready to play against Manchester City and seeing the Leicester City match being postponed, the player was actually only available for the match versus Southampton, in which he started on the bench and was used in the second half.
That seems to be too early for such comments to be made, although Albert sounds like he’s very aware of what Martinez’s choices for the World Cup might end up being.
