Tahith Chong was in talks with Inter Milan over a possible move as his contract with Manchester United was set to expire after this season.
However, the Dutchman committed his long-term future to the Red Devils on Monday and his current deal runs until 2022. The Old Trafford club have an option to further extend it by a year.
FcInterNews claims the winger had agreed to the Nerazzurri’s offer for five years, worth €1.5m (after tax) per season plus bonuses, in February.
Inter’s idea was to sign the player and send him out on loan, but Chong rejected the idea of going to China or joining another Italian side on a temporary deal.
Chong wanted to be at the San Siro from the beginning, but that wasn’t possible because he wasn’t in Antonio Conte’s plans. The Italian club still wanted to sign him because they viewed the wideman as an asset for the future.
Manchester United matched Inter’s offer, which convinced Chong to make a u-turn. This option was suggested by Stellar Group, who it’s stated share good relations with Ed Woodward. According to the report, this factor was ‘decisive’ for the attacker to sign a new deal with the English club.
Agent Mohamed Sinouh is unhappy with this option because he would have collected more commission if Chong had moved to Inter.
Chong’s decision was decisive as he preferred to continue with United rather than get involved in Italy as another client of Sinouh. He’s also happy with his supportive role with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Conte’s decision to not include him in his plans at Inter coupled with United’s good relations with Stellar Group helped the latter to retain Chong at the club.
