Ashley Young to Inter Milan has been a bit of a whirlwind this week.
After rumours of talks between the winger-turned-defender and Inter, it was claimed on Wednesday that a transfer is happening, it’s just a question of when.
Young’s Manchester United contract expires in the summer and he’s therefore able to speak to other clubs and agree a move as a free agent. The assumption was that’s what he’s done with the Serie A club, although it appears nothing is signed right now.
Gazzetta dello Sport report Ed Woodward has moved strongly into the transfer situation, and offered the player a renewal. That’s been rejected, as far as the Italian media have it, but Woodward is willing to ‘take the risk’ of losing Young for nothing, and wants to keep him this month.
The hope would be that he’d then agree to a renewal before the season is over.
This somewhat scuppers Inter’s plans, with the club likely hoping they could have agreed a token fee with Manchester United for the player to leave Old Trafford this month.
Antonio Conte wants a fullback, and he wants one now.
