Trying hard to get a new forward in before the end of the transfer window, Leeds United decided to go for either Bamba Dieng or Cody Gakpo.

The latter was by far the better player, and would have cost more money, but despite efforts from Elland Road to sign the Dutchman, he decided to stay put for the time being.

However, soon after the deadline passed, despite Leeds being a bit shocked that he didn’t want to move, it was claimed that the Premier League side would return for him in January.

The Whites also signed Wilfried Gnonto late on in the window, but that is a deal for the future, as Gakpo would immediately come into the first team and have an impact, hopefully one similar to Luis Sinisterra’s following his transfer from Feyenoord.

There are many out there who believe that shouldn’t be a problem, with one of those being Iván Márquez, who believes the Netherlands international is up there with the top names.

He told AS: “Cody Gakpo is already in the crosshairs of the greats and it won’t be long before he leaves. The PSV winger is good and fast. He perhaps lacked a little more level in European games, but he has the talent.”

That last bit is perhaps why none of the huge names in Europe made a move in the summer, and many will see Leeds as an ideal stepping stone for him to continue his development before moving on to one of the true elite teams in the world.

Just like a certain Raphinha did when he arrived from Rennes, before moving to Barcelona this summer for a big fee after delighting the Elland Road faithful for two years.
