Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster Rodrigo Gomes has admitted that his move to the club has seen one major improvement in him so far, his defensive work.

Record have an interview with the 21-year-old today after something of a hit and miss first season with Wolves this year.

He joined in a €15m move from SC Braga in the summer but found himself playing a substitute role at best under Gary O’Neil and Vitor Pereira this season. He ended the campaign with 28 appearances in all competitions, 25 in the Premier League, but just 1068 minutes in total.

He’s not overly concerned about that, though, and instead insists it’s been a year of development for him instead.

“English football is very fast and has players with very high technical skills,” he said.

“It was good to grow more in terms of defence and to be better positioned. It will be important for the European Championship. I feel that I will be stronger in defence.”

After his season with Wolves, the winger will be a part of Portugal’s set up at the U21 European Championship this summer.

Portugal will be one of the favourites for that tournament, with a strong selection of young players that includes the likes of Gomes, fellow Wolves men Carlos Borges and Fabio Silva, Geovany Quenda and Southampton’s Matheus Fernandes.

Gomes is aware of their strength in depth and admits that the dream is to win something to justify the talent that they have.

“The objective is to win,” he added.

“It is a dream that has been with this generation for some time, and it is also a dream for me. We are working well, reaching the finals and we will certainly give a good response.”
